I just got out of 2 months in residential ED treatment for AN almost 2 weeks ago and I have some rambling thoughts; I was quite thin, probably close to what many of the people making this content think they would be satisfied with. I say “think” bc the problem is the mindset never shifts. There’s always a new part of the body to focus on and wish were smaller, and your ability to even see yourself accurately becomes compromised. Also, yeah, I was thin, but I was also chronically exhausted, easily overwhelmed, almost totally isolated, and basically a zombie of myself. I didn’t have the energy to have a job (nor did I have the brainpower), or take care of myself, or do any of the hobbies I used to care about. I woke up nauseous and shaky every morning. My hair turned frizzy and coarse and unmanageable, then it began falling out. My teeth are in terrible shape. My digestion was WRECKED. My skin looked like shit. And that’s just the really obvious stuff. At 33, I had no life. And the crazy thing was after 20 years with AN I wasn’t even able to recognize how sick I had become. So I blamed MYSELF for my lack of functionality. I felt like a total and complete failure. AN/its behaviors is not an escape from self-hatred, it’s actually a guaranteed way to drown in it perpetually. And now I’m about to turn 34 having to build a real life for myself while trying to manage recovery and all the uncomfortable elements that come with it. *To any young people with an ED that might see this: get help as soon as you can, and even if it doesn’t stick right away, keep trying to recover.* The greatest quote about recovery that I read in treatment was this: “Keep pushing forward even when the ED voice screams at you. Things tend to scream when dying.”
